munchcrunch is a simple, standalone replacement for Google Reader.

Multiple users are supported by using email accounts as a key. The email also acts as a measure of "security by obscurity". If someone else knows the web address and registered email, they will be able to read your subscription posts, mark them as read, change your subscription list etc.

You can use a HTTP authentication system if you want the pages more fully private at the cost of some convenience.

Quick Start

To install munchcrunch on your server:

  1. Download the ZIP.
  2. Unzip into a directory on your favourite webserver with PHP support.

To configure munchcrunch:

  1. Open http://{server}/{munchcrunch dir} in your browser.
  2. Enter an email address and authentication key to register it ("munchcrunch" by default; configurable in conf/prefs.module).
  3. Add subscription feed URLs as required.
  4. Register a cron job or webcron service to refresh feeds for your account in the background by calling http://{server}/{munchcrunch dir}?munch&m={email account} if you wish
(this is generally only needed for people with a significant number of feeds).

  • HTTP server such as Apache (recommended)
  • PHP 5.2+

  • munchcrunch runs best on a server which supports URL rewriting, such as Apache with mod_rewrite enabled. Most Linux distros come pre-configured with this setup. An off-the-shelf solution for Windows is the Uniform Server.
